Default 4x4 swap

I have 2 dakota's - one is 2wd North Carolina truck and the 2nd is a 4x4 rusty salt belt truck. The 2wd has 100,000 less miles. I want to convert the 2wd to 4x4. Both trucks are 1999's with V6. 2wd is auto and 4x4 is manual. What size of a problem am I creating? Has this been done? better yet can it be done? Does the rear end "need" to be swapped? I know the tranny, transfer case, drive shafts, clutch slave and master cylinders, hang a clutch peddle, cut hole in floor for shifter. I pretty much have it figured out except maybe some of the "little things", like does the automatic truck have a seperate ECM for the tranny or is it incorperated all in one with the engine ECM? When I'm finished both trucks need to be back together and running. Looking for some help and suggestions, thanks

It's going to be an extremely long processes to do the swap and get both completely running.

You said the 4x4 is rusty but what is the bad areas? Frame? Body?

You will not be able to just swap over the components the frames are different. Unless you want to cut and weld and fabricate everything, if you do that a Solid Axle Swap would be best.

If the 4wd frame is okay just swap frames, as long as both trucks are the same body style like club cab short bed ect.

That is what I did. Just keep all the frame drive-line axles engine if wanted and put the 2wd body on the 4wd frame. Then swap the transmission ect or if the other engine or other stuff is better swap it over. You will need to swap wires and computer over. Since you got both trucks it is possible, just take your time and don't destroy it when removing.

For a good look of how I did it check out this post.
