Default Bad u joint/ drive shaft

My 2000 4.7 quad cab making a clicking/ clanking sound when I accelerate, and it does it in 4wd. But this only happens when I rhomp on the gas pedal, normal take off, it doesn't make a sound. I had the u joints replaced 2 summers ago, but it does sound like a u joint problem. they're all tight, and not loose, everything seems to be normal except the sound. CV joint replaced last summer... Any body havr any suggestions on to hat this could be?

The clicking and clanking sound, if coming from the front, sounds like another CV axle problem. That is the classic noise they make.

Yeah sounds like a CV. Check all the CV joints in the half shafts and the drive shaft. More than likely that one of the boots are torn and dirt got in there and wore the bearings out. Although it only happens under acceleration it will progressively get worse to the point where it does it all the time. Then eventually the bearings will give up and the CV will be junk.

Could also be a front drive shaft......the cv in the 'pod' at the transfer case can pop a boot.....when mine started going bad it would sound like some one jingleing keys under mt truck at highway speed. Wouldn't hurt to take a look at that boot.

Yeah, that's why I was saying check both the boots for the half shafts and the boot for the driveshaft. Seems to me that it is more common for the boot on the driveshaft to tear than the half shafts.

The sound doesnt come from the front though, it comes from the rear end, i had the front right CV joint replaced this past summer, the boots look fine, i dont see any rips. I was thinkin it was something along the lines of a bad rear u joing, or somethings wrong with my rear pumpkin

That's odd then if it only does it in 4wd. Nothing changes for the main drive shaft when you put it in 4wd. You're sure it's coming from the rear? Did you check the cv joint to the front drive shaft on the transfer case end?

Hi, I'm new here but this grabbed my attention because of a problem I had on my 98 4WD, and the fix was easy (but I did it the hard way).

There is a C-clip on the rear output shaft of the transfer case that has a habit of breaking, allowing the shaft to drift forward when accelerating or when hitting bumps just right. It starts out by making clicking/clanking noises but as time goes on it will get worse/louder and more violent.

I dropped the transfer case and then pulled the tail cone off. You DO NOT have to do this! even if this is not the problem, it is a simple check that will only cost you about a hour of time and some fluid.....pull the rear drive shaft off, remove the tail cone. If the C-clip has failed, you will see the pieces of the C-clip either inside the cone or on the floor, if it hasn't failed you will see the C-clip on the shaft..it's very obvious. Without the C-clip, you can move the shaft back and forth, and this is what is making the noise....the shaft moving forward, even a little bit, is grinding gear teeth.
