replacing rear axle help.
Hello all, It's been a while since I've been on the forum, but I have a big question. My wife laid my truck on its side and bent the RR passenger axle, I was wondering how to tell what rear end gears I had so I can get a replacement axle It's a 98 dakota sport club cab with a 318 and 4wd. I was wondering where to look to find out what kind of rear end, and what axle I need for it. I'm not the most mechanically inclined, and my father in law is going to do the work, but I need to know what axle I need. Thanks for the help!
Well the first thing is to look in the Glovebox and see what the sticker says about rear axle size and ratio. If there is no sticker in the glove box look at the back of the rear ens and see if the rear cover is shaped like a Stop Sign,if so it has the 9 1/4 rear axle if the cover is more oval shaped it is a 8 1/2.Or you can call the dealership give them the last 9 of the VIN and they should be able to tell you what is in the TRUCK
thank you for the quick answer. I'll check that out! I looked and had the sticker in the glove box and it said it had 3.5 gears, is that the same as 3.55, because that is all I found. It also says its an 8.5 axle, how would I shop online and know I'm getting the right one because I'm not seeing any on ebay or anywhere I'm finding axles but want to get the right one. Thanks!

You should check junkyards, craigslist, etc. Honestly, you'll just have to look at it in person to know for sure that you are getting the right one. There should be a tag on one of the cover bolts with the gear ratio.
Also, just because you have the chry. 8.25 inch rear axle does not mean that you are limited to just getting that axle. The chry. 9.25 inch will fit as well and be stronger.

ok I'll have to look at the tag, but since it's 4wd wouldn't a need matching axles, or just matching gears? It's only the shaft that is bad and I don't want to replace the whole rear end if I don't have to. Thanks for all the help.
