Default Just bought my 1st Dakota. Got sum ?'s

I just bought an 2000 dakota with the v8. It has cold air intake in it already. Runs great but horrible on gas, does anybody have any ideas what I can do to remedy this problem. I have driven many v8s in my life and never got this. Also my truck tends to shift funny sometimes it just doesn't feel like it's going into gear? Any ideas on what I could do to fix these problems? Thanks for any help.

I really don't know how these guys are getting over 15-17 mpg.I have just tuned my 2003 Quadcab 4x4 automatic with 3.55 gears and a set of Cooper P275/70/16 Discovery H/T tires,I have not done any type of modding, still has factory air cleaner, factory Cat.On the open road running 70 mph,the engine turning around 1900 rpm,the overhead display says 15.9-16.2.Now intown I average 12-13 and that is on a good day.My truck has 122000 miles and has never been off-road,mudding,or abused.I would LOVE to fine out how to get 17-19 mpg. The main question is why is anyone worried about fuel mileage,if you buy a truck you do not buy it for fuel mileage gas or diesel. I have heard of people with the newer model Diesels quoting they can get over 21mpg and that is hard to believe. But like I have said you buy a truck to haul,do work out of,or as a daily driver, they just don't get gas mileage

Also I must say that a DODGE has never been know for gas mileage.I do know that some of the Chevys and Fords get a little better that we do but not much better. It just depends on the style of truck that you like. These body style Dakota's have the best body styles out there in the mid-sized truck, and in my opinion even the full sized trucks. It is just up to what each owner's taste is.

Just a chime in - I am getting 15.5 MPG consistently with my '99 Dakota Sport 2WD/5.2L/Auto/all factory/186K Mi. Most of my driving is either in-town through well-timed lights (very little stop/go) or on the highway going around town. It is kept well maintained and I use a light foot.... 1/4 throttle from a standing stop gives a mild smoke show with my foot off the brake. My guess is the light throttle is a big part of it.

I had a K&N cold air system on my previous truck - an F150, and that system was a pain.

If you have a 5.2 welcome to the club of bad mpg 15 tops out of them unless you have a manual and you will get 1-2mpg more.

Speek for your self.. Average for me mixed driving.. is 13.8-15 granted that is just me taking short runs to the store stomping on the gas..

Open road is about 14-15, Highway is about 18-21 (With out a bunch of wind) but recently been getting around 16-18ish highway because of all the heavy wind we been getting..

Surely you have too. My cousin had a 94 ram 318 4x4 sc with 32's had a 5 speed and saw 16 average best on highway was 19mpg. I didnt believe it till I borrowed it for the weekend and sure enough with my crazy driving I got 15.3
