2001 backfires when cold

cracked coil?
that was the problem?> I ask cuz I have the same problem with my 2002, and a shop just told me a bad o2 sensor, and catalic converter. but I did get the check engine light on, with a 420 code, bad cat? but the shop does not know if the cat would couse the backfire. I will geet the coil today...
