Default Best Transfer Case Switch?

Hey all, I've got a 2003 Durango. I used to have a 79 jeep renegade, but children and finances forced me to sell it. Now I'm looking to make the current family car (the Durango), my family friendly off road vehicle. The problem is that my Durango currently doesn't have a low range. Having done a lot of wheeling in my jeep, I know how crucial a low range can be in the rough stuff.

So, my quesion: Is it possible to add a low range to an existing transfer case (I did that with my jeep), or is there a transfer case that I can switch to that offers a low range? All the research I've done so far throws me to the case I already have. Are there other low range options available?

I promise you, it's true. The only switch is the one from 2 to 4.

NV 233 and NV 244 were both put into the Durango in 2003...

NV 244 AWD models do not have a low range...they have some sort of viscous coupler type thing in there that is similar to a differential...

The cases are externally identical and can be swapped without any issues. If you want to ditch the AWD to pick up low range 4 wheel drive, get a 233 t-case...but, you lose the nicety of AWD...

I knew the awd didnt have it but he said he only had 2wd and 4wd options so that told me no awd.

I will double check tonight. I'm not sure exactly where to look but I'll crawl under there and see if I can figure out if it is a 233 or 244. What is being said doesn't quite mesh with what I thought it was though. To clarify, it has a 2w to 4w switch in it, and that is the extent of transfer case communication. If it were AWD, wouldn't that be on all the time? And, as was stated, if it weren't AWD wouldn't there be a low range? Perhaps there was a cheaper transfer case used in some vehicles?

Thanks for the replies, I haven't been able to find much out about this vehicle in off road applications.
