Default TOO MUCH air coming into intake? (4" vs 3" intake decision)

Ahoy all. I have a 03 Dakota Quad Cab 3.9. Most of the intakes I see have 3" pipes (same size as the stock air cover), BUT, I have seen intakes with 4" pipes and a custom intake cover.

Of course, I want more power, and a 4" pipe would give much more air flow, BUT, is there such a thing as overkill? Would too MUCH air access hurt the engine? I would think logically, no. The engine will take what it needs.... but maybe I am not thinking of something important.

The intake I have on my truck is huge its bigger than the k&n tube.

I couldnt beat it I got it off ebay for 38.00 shipped. If you look on other sites it retails for around 200.00.

It looks up high in this pic but its not really, I think its just the angle of the pic.

^^^ You gotta watch yourself without a shield around your air intake. My buddy in his Lifted Ram went through a few inches of water at speed and sucked up water and blew a rod or two.

I don't think it matters, as long as the air system isn't being choked. The engine sucks at the same psi regardless of how big the tube is.

Would you rather breath through a straw or a 4 inch pipe? I'm thinking less restriction=power

My personal preference however lies with my air cleaner. You can hear the sound of air rushing, im a very strong believer, even if it is for a carb

It still has to go through the throttle body. So as long as it isn't smaller than the diameter of that, how big you go isn't going to matter. You can have no pipe at all and it's still going to suck at the same pressure.
