Sounds like you need to pull the top of your trans open. Not hard by any means. Just anoyying if you have a console.

There will be 4 bolts holding the shifter on(after you get the console, skirt etc out), and then it will lift up. I would say put it in 4th so you knw where it was/where to put it back. Then you can check out the bottom of the mechanism, and top of your trans.
2 things I would suspect:
-shifter ball, bottom of stick, inside trans is worn, or not recieving lube(oiled by trans, dont grease)
-Or, your shifting rails could be munged up due to neglect of fluid change, and that would cause the forks/etc to slide poorly, giving you the sluggish feel.

Maybe Marvel Mystery fluid has a Trans additive that would help clean if you see noticable buildup....Take pics if you get it apart...

 

well i took the shifter out the other night and i couldn't see any thing wrong. I wiped the shifter down and cleaned a little bit of grit out of the rubber seal. Other than that I didn't see anything wrong. I didn't take any pictures since it looked clean enough to eat off down inside. I was only able to get right at 2 qt of fluid in through the fill hole on the side and I was told it took 2.7 qt so i added a little more fluid as well but it's still a little tight feeling when it's cold after about 15-20 mins of driving it shifts like a new one.

 

well I finally had a mechanic check it out he noticed some copper metal shavings inside of the top end and feels it's a bur on the rail for the primary fork. His opinion was to just deal with it until it got worse he said i was looking at around 600-1200 to tear it apart to clean it out and rebuild. I've noticed rebuilt one's on ebay and other sites around that amount. my question is what should i do just drive it while i know it has a problem , rebuild mine, or rebuilt offline??

 

I think my second snychro is going so I will most likely be taking it out if I can make it to spring and rebuid. When riding the bike isnt so cold....Ill do cams and TB and tune then hopefully as well. Hell, I might have to do brakes and tires too. Going to be a busy spring I think!
