Default Painting valve covers

Anything I should be aware of when I remove them, anything maintenance wise I should look for? Also I'm planning on red but any color suggestions?

years ago my friend worked for fel-pro. they will NOT warranty a valve cover gasket if it has rtv on it. i dont like rtv cause it has silicon in it and that causes it slide instead of staying put. i like permatex #2. put it on the side against the valve cover.

Clean them thoroughly with a degreaser. I use dawn dishwashing liquid. Then sand them smooth. Primer, paint, 1000 grit wet sand just to knock any rough spots off, paint another coat, sand any rough spots, clearcoat (two coats perhaps). Use engine enamel for the paint and clearcoat.
