Default NV3500 differences?

I have a few questions about the NV3500 transmission. I'm currently doing research for a tranny swap - auto to manual- on a 99 4x4 5.2 dak. and I'm trying to find more info about the transmission.

What differences are there through the years? I was looking around for a 97-99 nv3500, but I also realize they used them a few years earlier, and also from 2000-2004 on v6's and v8's. It would be nice if I could expand my search to include other years. Are the speedo pickups, etc the same?

Is it possible to use the transfer case from the auto trans on the manual? I believe they are the same TC, but do they have the same spline counts and everything?

Will the transfer case from the 99 automatic dakota bolt onto nv3500's from the 2000+ dakotas?

Sorry I got a lot of questions. I just want to make sure I have everything straight, and get the right parts from the get go. The fewer trips I have to make to a junkyard, the better.

If there is anything else I should know, please let me know. I understand a tranny swap isn't ideal, but after searching for 6+ months for a dakota that matches my criteria, isn't beat to hell, and has less than a million miles, this is starting to look like a decent option.

THANKS!

assuming you're swapping a 44/46re out for a nv3500 and your transfer case is a 231 the spline count should be the same. both are 23 spline.

and the speedo pickup should be on the tailshaft of the transfer case. any speed sensors on the auto are only for the auto to know which gear it needs to be in.

the only problems i forsee arising for you is the difference in length of the two trannies. i'm not sure on the exact length of the nv3500 (while trying to find that out i stumbled on your post), but the jeep version of that tranny, the nv3550, is 3" inches shorter than the 42/44/46 re transmissions. so you may have to change or adjust your transfer case linkage and you will need to get new driveshafts made. your transmount crossmember may also be different. but the transfer case itself, should bolt right on.

Default can I help?

My '99 4x4 had the AX-15 (think they all did until 2000), which is sitting in the garage right now on the floor along with all the parts and a 3.9L motor. Unfortunately I'm not much good on autos or the differences but if there's anything you need me to check on the '99 model just shout. It had 152,xxx on it and still had the original clutch about 6 weeks ago when I started my Cummins swap. No plans for it myself...
