Default New 2002 Dakota Sport 3.9L Reg Cab

Hey guys,

Buying a new truck for $4000 with only 47,000 KMS, not miles!

It was driven by my grandfather (original owner) and he's just deciding to upgrade to a new one.

This is gonna be my first truck (currently own a 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix) which I am quite happy about. Going to be using the truck for towing our small trailer to and from our cottage (approx 100 kms/60 miles) each trip.

It only needs a windshield and 2 rear tires to pass safety.

One problem I'm a little concerned of is that it has an oil leak. Could this be something as simple as the pan gasket? It has a bunch of oil residue on the bottom of the pan and I can't see any significant amount of oil in the engine bay. I'm not too experienced with mechanics - I only do tire changes/oil changes and a bit of body work so I will probably have a shop do it for me unless its a rather simple job.

Planning on buying it next friday so I will post a few pictures when I do.

Cheers!

Okay no replies.

I'll try to reword this better.

Are there any common problems with the 3.9L engines in terms of oil leaks or do dakotas have cheap pan gaskets or sealants?

Thanks

All right !! A pontiac guy who also drives a dodge truck , dont get no better than that !! Oil pan gasket is a one piece deal and i doubt that it`s bad ,, so the only thing`s i can think of right off hand that " might " cause the oil leak that your describing is #1 -the rear seal on the back of the intake manifold where it meets the block could be bad and leaking oil down the back of the engine and causing the oil leak you describe , or , #2 - the oil pressure sending unit , also at the back of the intake manifold , could be leaking oil and causing the oil leak you describe ,,, you`ll have to get a flashlight and a mirror and have a look at the back of the engine to know for sure

Thanks man,

Learning something new all the time - had no idea its a one piece set up for the pan gasket. I'll have a look at the intake seal as well as the oil unit. I may even take the time to buy one of those UV light kits which help you determine where the leak is coming from.
