Question Fuel Guage Issue

Hey all..like many others, I am having a fuel guage issue on my '97 3.9 Dakota 4X4. My guage reads accurately, but will randomly drop to empty, the light will come on and the chime sounds. This may not happen for several days, or will happen every few minutes. Doesn't seem to be any pattern at all, or makes no difference how much fuel is in the tank. I have checked the wiring and found nothing loose and all contacts appear to be solid. The truck also has a new ECM in it. Any suggestions would be appreciated, thanks.
