Default 2004 4.7L engine interchange question

Hi All!

We have a customer needing a 4.7L engine for his 04 Dakota, 4x4. Our interchange shows that there is a difference in the 4x2 and 4x4 engine blocks, we think mounting blocks for the carrier. It indicates an engine from a 4x4 can be used in a 4x2 truck, but not vice versa. Ours is a 4x2 truck. We have searched, googled and yahoo'ed every time we get a call about this engine, all potential customers seem to have a 4x4 truck. This is one answer I haven't been able to find on the internet! I've tried searching the forum too, but so far no luck.

Anyone have any experience or knowledge about this. Seems that this was only an issue in 2003-2004 model Dakotas and 2003 Durangos.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Hmm I have never heard about the drivetrain not being able to accept different engine. I think that is a load of BS. I put a 06 dakota motor in my old truck (04 Dakota) and it had no problems at all. I do not remember if it came from a 4WD or 2WD. You should be able to put in any 4.7L that has the newer pcm (2003-2007)

Well, we did some digging through the crash guides, and my dad went out and looked at ours a little closer. Our 04 had a mounting hole, or "boss" as the interchange calls it, on the left rear of the engine block. We're guessing that is where the carrier mounts on a 4x4.

Our customer is going to give it a whirl. Both trucks are 04 models, so no issues with the PCM.

Thanks for the help! I'll update the thread if we find out it didn't work on his 4x4 truck.

It's been a few months now, haven't heard anything from our customer, so we assume all is well.

Thanks dodgeforum, for helping us make a sale!!
