Very thick liquid in expansion tank? 4.7 Also small coolant leak.
Hey guys I am new to the forum here and have recently ran into an issue with my 2000 Dodge Dakota w/4.7.
I noticed a slight coolant smell today so I popped the hood and saw VERY slight coolant drips on the expansion tank I did a smell test and it absolutely pointed towards the radiator cap (not expansion cap). I have bought a new cap and will throw it on tomorrow morning after checking the coolant level. I think the cap will solve my problem.
My main concern however is the expansion tank and what is inside. whatever it is, it's THICK! It appears to be at a good level but it almost seems as thick as a 20-50 oil. (this is when the motor is at full temperature).
What is in the expansion tank? Could someone give me some pointers?
When I checked the coolant level on saturday the coolant was right up on the radiator cap.
I checked the oil tonight and it is full and CLEAN!
Of course being new to american products and hearing horror stories about the 4.7 HG I am slightly worried. I would love to hear any suggestions as soon as possible! thank you all!

Not sure what horror stories you've heard, I got an 01 4.7 with 156k miles on it... been a good dang truck. I would certainly drain the fluid out of the overflow and flush it out. As to whats in there, its hard to tell... Being that the truck is new to you "being new to american products," means the previous own could have put corn syrup in it for storage through the winter... you never know... Id start by flushing the tank out, and for fun flushing the cooling system just to see if perhaps its inside the motor too...

thanks for the advise!
Good to hear that they are a good truck. Mine is at 150k on the dot!
Sounds like someone may have mixed 2 types of coolant...Dex-cool with standard green which will cause a syrup like solution. Flush the entire cooling system ASAP and replace with a 50/50 mix of the standard green coolant and distilled water. Good luck.
