Default 98 Dakota stalling going from reverse to drive

Hi. Ive looked this up and have seen other stalling issues, and wondering if this could be a tps problem. Also, as a side note...my backup lights only work when im a little bit toward park...not when the shift lever shows it in full reverse, and that's been like that since i purchased it two months ago....but the other problem is my main issue right now..

It's intermittent, but when i go from reverse to drive, the rpms drop, and looks like the voltage drops too...then it dies quietly. No bucking...just dies.

Truck runs quiet and quite good for a 200,000+ mile engine.

Anyone else run into this?

It started after I had freeze out plugs behind the tranny replaced. No adjustments were made to the tranny or the engine. Yesterday my speed sensor went and replaced it...works fine..hoped that would be the solution but nope...still doing it off and on.

I had simular problem.. i took the Trottle body off compleatly and cleaned it really good.. esp the IAC hole get all the black gunk out..

Replace the gasket with a new one and solved the problem. dont push or pull or tun on the IAC valve though as it will cause damage and make it not work well or click click from time to time. There should be a DIY guide in the DIY section.

Thanks jonda im going to give it a try. I also have a problem with long crank time when the truck is warm. first thing in the morning it starts up withal quick turn of the key. Someone said tps or cps could be the problem. We'll see if cleaning the intake works.

Thanks again.

Maybee.. but i never had that problem.. maybee turn your key on for a few seconds first let the system prime up incase the fuel is draining back in the tank? but that would suggest a problem with the fuel pump not staying primed (pressure) there is something in there ive seen ppl talk about.. my grannies Ford Car was the same thing turned out to be the fuel pump.

Don't forget to check the simple things. Check and make sure sure your battery terminals aren't corroded. I began having this issue and cleaned all of the corrosion off and put a little oil on the posts and haven't had the problem since. Hope my 2 cents helps

This weekend, i did a cursory cleaning of the throttle body...Seafoam deep clean or whatever it's called and a toothbrush. Didn't take it off though, but it cleaned up well for now.

I also put Seafoam into the brake booster vac that goes to the intake. I got smoke, not tons like ive seen, but a good amount.

Between doing those two things, the reverse problem didn't get rectified, but i'll tell you what, I thought my truck ran and idled well before for 208k miles, but now the gas pedal is not hard...the responsiveness is ridiculously awesome, my idle is steady, and the trans is shifting more consistently than before. I put part of the can in my gas tank. Before when i would jump on it, it would make a chattering sound...thought it was lifters, but now thinking it was fuel injectors...no more noise.

I have a flowmaster, and the sound was awesome before. Nice throaty sound...now it's actually a bit quieter...but smooth throatiness.

I have to say, seafoam is pretty cool. Id recommend it to anyone.

Next step is to take the throttle body off...hopefully this weekend.

Someone thought I might have a problem with my cps and that could be causing the reverse issue...but im not too sure.

Jonda, my battery terminals are clean, and it's a new battery. Some times it takes a few seconds to crank...when i put the key to the on position and let it sit a second to let the fuel pump prime, it doesn't change anything. It's all very intermittent. Sometimes it starts very quickly, others it takes a few seconds to turn over. Nothing serious, but can be annoying.
