2004 Dakota Quad Cab
Hi everyone. My son has a 2004 Dakota 4X4 Quad cab. Pretty good condition for being 8 years old. It has two bad cylinders (3&5), and needs a head gasket. Worth putting $4000 into, or sell it as is with the bad engine? How much could he possible get for it the way it is? Body is in good condition. Small dent on r/rear quarter.
Thanx for your help,
Jeff

It is worth fixing up, but $4,000 for a rebuilt engine sounds way to extreme. If you guys did the removal and reinstall and just have a shop rebuild the engine it would be under $1,000 If you had a shop do it all probably under $2,000.
I will move this to the 2nd Generation Dakota Sub-Forum.

I agree.
If you and your son were to pull the old engine out and either rebuild the engine, or find a used one to have a shop install it wouldn't come close to $4000. I'd find another shop.
As for selling/keeping - if the truck is rust free and solid with a decent tranny I'd say swap the engine. If you're unable to pull the engine yourself I would still try to atleast find another engine or at the VERY least try another shop. $4000 is too much.
