Probably the a bad ball joint or tie rod. Take it to an aliment shop most will do free test drive/check.

I will move this to the 2nd Generation Dakota Sub-Forum.

Lightbulb Look at this

I was getting this popping I found out its coming from the steering shaft it’s a common problem with the Dakota if you crawl under and look at the steering shaft it has two small U-joints and a flex shaft between them the flex joint needs lubing up and so do the small U-joints. First spray everything with WD40 or your choice of penetrating spray do this a few times let it soak in well then a few days later drip some Mobile 1 or other oil on the U-joints and flex shaft you may need to apply the oil one more time. You will need to get some oil under the rubber boot that covers the flex shaft also.

This should do it but if that shaft is rusted bad or worn out you will need to replace the shaft.

I still get the noise but way less than before I should replace the shaft at some time they are $150 http://www.ebay.com/itm/STEERING-COLUMN-INTERMEDIATE-SHAFT-DAKOTA-97-98-99-2WD-/260825439103?fits=Modelakota|Year:1998&hash=item 3cba685b7f&item=260825439103&pt=Motors_Car_Truck_P arts_Accessories&vxp=mtr
