Depends on what engine/transmission you have.

I was told by my buddy(mechanic) that it is best to go ahead and get it completely flushed instead of just training out the couple of quarts that you get by dropping the pan and changing the filter. They have a machine that will do a complete fluid replacement. Not super cheap but may be better for longevity.

I just drop the pan and do a fluid and filter change using about 5 quarts of fluid. Almost 100,000 miles and my tranny still shifts very well with no problems. I do this about every 25,000 miles. Depends on how much money you want to spend and how well it has been maintained. I have done this with several vehicles and never had a problem. My fluid has never looked or smelled bad when I changed it either.
