Find a donor truck, good drive train, junk body, then you've got everything you need for the swap, motor, tranny, computer, harness...this would probably be the smalles headache

I had a 98 2wd with the 5 speed that I switched the v6 for a 5.2. I easily solved my computer and wiring problem by tearing all that crap out. I went old school and put a 318 from a 71 power wagon in it. So i can't really help you as far as keeping it fuel injected. I can say your rear end can Definitely handle the 5.2.
Yeah, I think since mine is the 3.9, it's probably still the same in the front end. Like I said, I can get the engine physically in there fine, it's just when it comes to the computer stuff, I get confused... I'll figure it out.

No.

A 5.9 PCM should run it ok, then it can be tuned if desired.

Pcm controls the engine,tranny, sensors

The ctm controls the interior/exterior stuff lights, keyless entry, power door locks, radio and so on, wouldnt have anything to do with the overhead display.

I guarantee you a 97-99 PCM will not work.

I said 5.9, I didn't specify a year (which would idealy be the same year as the OP's truck).

I don't know why it doesn't work, it just doesn't. The guy's who've swapped manual trannys into their 00+ Dakota R/Ts have ran into this same problem, what they need is a 5.2 5 speed PCM because they can't get the auto tranny stuff programmed out. But there are no 00+ 5.2s and no 5.9s with manual trannys in Dakotas ever, so they're SOL.

Hmmm... maybe a 5.9 is the way to go. By the way, my truck is totally stripped, no power locks or windows, nothing. Just airbags and a stereo is really all I have.

You can run a 5.2 ok with a 5.9 PCM (which the proper year PCM is available) and you can always have to it tuned to be optimal if you want. FWIW in my OBD1 truck I ran my mostly stock 5.2 on a 5.9 Mopar PCM for quite a while and the AFRs were also fine.

Oh, I see what you're saying! I always thought that the PCM's were engine specific. Well that's great then, I'll just use a 5.9 pcm from an 02. I'm also going to be getting an SCT tuner soon. I talked to Sean at Hemifever tuning and told him my plans and he said it should work good, and it'd work with my V6 til I do the swap.
