1998 dakota rear end grinding noise
as the title suggest my dakota 1998 is making a metal on metal grinding noise from the back end.
it goes like this...just had the rear outer wheel bearings change(thinking this was the cure).
rear diff checked.
inner bearings were good and so were the outers but got changed anyways.
oil changed in rear diff.
just checked exhuast to make sure it aint catching or rubbing.
now the strange thing is that the truck needs to be driven for 20mins or more before it will make this noise.
it only make the noise when you have stopped and starting taking off again until you get to 25kmh then you cant hear it.
it never happens when its cold start.
done a search here and nothing matches
any thoughts please
oh just had the transfer case changed as i blew that one but it still made the noise before that went

did you pull the rear diff out and examine it? I had the same problem and I didn't think it was too bad till I passed my dad and on the freeway and he said he could hear it growling inside his truck. I found out that my thrust washers had blown apart and were cutting into the housing. I got a whole new third member for about 200 if i remember correctly from 6-states distributors.
