Thanks. That was the original link that got me thinking about doing it. The guy that did that used the tranny that came with the engine but I read somewhere else that the 4.7 and the hemi both take the same tranny. So I'm trying to find out, if I get a '04-'05 engine will it mount up to my '02 tranny or are there differences between some of the years so that only certain years work together?

What about the transmissions though? I read on another post that the hemi and the 4.7 used that same transmission. Is that true for most years or only certain years?
Early 4.7 used the 45rfe, later 4.7s and all Hemis (automatics) use the 545rfe, but the 45rfe is the SAME transmission, just a software update made the 545rfe, so in that regard, if you do a Hemi it will bolt right up (and if you have the 45rfe then 10 minutes with a StarScan will make it a 545rfe.

Read through the Ram sections - are MANY more posts from guys with 4.7s with issues compared to Hemi owners...

Awesome! That clears up a lot. The only other issue I'm not sure about is how it would work with 4 wheel. It appears that the diff. would be in the way. Would a lift kit solve that issue?

You know, I'm not exactly a huge fan of my 4.7...

I am basically starting my rebuild today. Heads are back and about all I've done so far is hone the cylinder walls.

I figured I'd take a pic of my original timing set that I'm replacing to show the difference between yours and how clean mine is at 102k miles:

I'm not really seeing a whole lot of difference there. Besides a lack of sludge that is. Is that red glaze common on all the 4.7s?

That was my point, mine was 100% sludge free and I've done basically the same as you, full synthetic oil at 6000 miles like clockwork...

Well... I think I'm going for the hemi swap. It just seems to make more sense going that route with the 4.7s having more issues. Now I gotta get enough dough to fund this bad boy. I'll make a new thread when I get going, but it probably won't be for a few months unless I'm really lucky.

Default 5.7 Hemi Swap

I'm glad to see you've decided to swap to a Hemi . I think you'll be happier with the results.. There are enough people now who have done it that information isn't hard to find. Unlike others before you..
There are a few differences between a 4x4 and 2wd swap , the main one being the cross member notch. on a 4x4 you have to change the oil pan and move the pickup tube back "I can build you an oil pan".. The other major difference is the Motor mounts . 2wd trucks have a completely different mount with rubber flex connections..The main thing is to make sure you get the ("ECM")"computer"~, the wiring harness , APPS, box with cable , EVAP Purge system , and motor mounts with the engine you buy. It wouldn't hurt to get the PDC ("Fuse Box Under The Hood"), as well.. with those things you'll cut out a lot of headache .. Make sure who ever pulls the motor don't cut any wires . You'll need everything from the headlights to the dash... O2 sensors are expensive , so it will help if you can get them too..The best year motors for this swap are the 04' ~ 06'..You're transmission will bolt up to Hemi's , But if you can get the transmission with the Motor , It will make the swap a little easier..I'll be looking forward to reading you're build thread, Include lots of pics..
If you need help , advice , or have any questions , let me know .
