Default transmission starts off in 2nd

I have a 2001 dakota v-6 with an automatic. The truck feels like it is starting off in 2nd gear. After you take off it shifts fine and you can pull it down into 1st and it works fine. While sitting at a light you can feel the trans shift into first then back out. If you pump the gas on take off sometimes it will drop into 1st and take off fine. The filter and oil was changed 25k miles ago. The truck has 159k miles on it and I purchased it used. May have a replacement transmission in it so I really don't know how many miles is on the transmission. Really don't know what to look for or where to start to fix the probleml. If it was gm product I would change the shift modual. Any help would be great. Thanks

you my want to use an external fluid filter. go to auto zone get a 2210 magna-fine filter. it is for 3/8 tubing. which fit most if not all chryslers. use high pressure hose. other truck brands might need wix 58964, 5/16 tubing. my idea is this filter will take the dirt load, keeping the inside filter much cleaner than other wise. i did not install mine, i had my mech do it. but it shouldn't be hard. but you need to remove some tubing, and flair each end. if you you need to add tubing ONLY use steel brake line tubing. DO NOT USE COPPER, it will brake. the factory uses steel for a reason.
