Could anyone tell if I am correct in thinking the transmission control solenoid is located on the valve body which requires me to drop the pan to access it. My Dakota is a 2003 4.7L, 5 speed transmission.

Yes you will have to drop the pan. I found a video on this site in another post that showed the step by step. It was on a jeep but still the same transmission. The video was on you tube.
