03 Dakota block heater problem
No expert, but I believe block heaters replace the freeze plugs. Other than that, no idea.
Block heaters arent fused. The fuse for them will be your house fuse/breaker. Make sure you have power in the cord. If you do then you will need to test the heater/cord with a multi meter. Most of the times the block heater frys and wont do a thing. Usually if the cord is old and shorted it will either smoke or trip the breaker in the house. If its not super cold out no need for a block heater. I havent even used mine on my diesel yet this year and its been as low as 9 degrees.
You should be able to hear it "perk" pretty quickly after plugging in. As magnethead stated they are located in the side of the block in a freeze plug hole. The one on my 5.2 is on the passenger side of the block. Yes they do go out with frequent use or frayed/damaged cords. If you crawl underneath the truck you should be able to spot it pretty easy. Might be as easy as the cord coming unplugged from the heater. But IF you find the cord and connection good the heater itself isn't too difficult to change out IF you have access to it. Some blocks are pretty tight against the inner fenders. Just be prepaired for an antifreeze shower when you pop that baby out. Draining the block and radiatior FIRST helps.
