Default Dodge dakota 4 wheel drive problems

I have a 2004 dodge dakota sxt 4x4. When ever I put it into four-wheel drive and then switch back to two-wheel drive it makes a terrible grinding/clunking sound. If i am in four wheel drive it also makes this noise as well when i try to back up or sometimes when i first start to take off. It just started happening. I really need to fix this problem fast. Any ideas as to what the problem is?? thanks.

Can you tell if the noise is coming from the frontend or in the tcase?

Well it definitly could be a few things. Im kinda new to Dakota 4wds but not new to 4x4s in general. I suggest putting up the whole truck on jack stand and putting it in 4wd and let someone give a little gas and see if you can figure out the location. DO NOT get in front of or under it while doing this. You can check the CV boots up front for tears to see if they are shot. I think it may be one of the CV shafts.
