Default Band Adjustment

Hi guys,

I finally got a code for my shifting issues I've been having with my 42RE (governor pressure solenoid voltage low) so soon I will be dropping my pan, changing our the sensor an solenoid, and throwing some fresh fluid in there.

If any of you have every adjusted the bands on your transmissions I would really appreciate the help.

I found this information here on a Jeep 42RE website so I'm sure the information is the same, but I was wondering if anyone could clarify a few things for me.

1. Loosen band adjusting screw locknut. Then back locknut off 4-5 turns. Be sure adjusting screw turns freely in case. Apply lubricant to screw threads if necessary.
2. Tighten band adjusting screw to 8 Nm (72 in. lbs.) torque.
3. Back off front band adjusting screw 3-5/8 turns.
4. Hold adjuster screw in position and tighten locknut to 41 Nm (30 ft. lbs.) torque.

for rear band:

1. Loosen band adjusting screw locknut 5-6 turns. Be sure adjusting screw turns freely in lever. Lubricate screw threads if necessary.
2. Tighten adjusting screw to 8 Nm (72 inch lbs.) torque.
3. Back off adjusting screw 4 turns.
4. Hold adjusting screw in place and tighten locknut to 34 Nm (25 ft. lbs.) torque.

When they say loosen the band adjustment screw by 4-5 turns, do they mean 4 or 5 360 degree turns? That seems really loose to me (before tightening it).

Also, when they say to torque the locknut to 30 ft lbs while holding the adjuster screw in place, how would you do that? You would have to have a socket attached to a torque wrench over both the adjustment screw and the locknut, so how can you hold it in place?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

loosen the locknut 4 or 5 turns as for holding the adjustment nut hold it with a wrench and tighten the lock nut 30 lbs = snug it up its a lock nut to keep the adjuster from turning not a head bolt so good enough

My question is...

How can you fit a socket over the lock nut to torque it down, if you have a wrench in the way to prevent the adjustment nut from spinning?

don't bother with a socket just two wrenches 30 ft/ lbs isn't very tight just snug it up you can buy special sockets and such but for 30 lbs it's not worth it
