Intermittent AC problem
2004, 3.7L. Its happened twice now on long trips with several passengers at the end of a very hot day (90-100F) using the AC all day.
Both the fan speed becomes greatly reduced AND the cooled air warms. I usually have around 40F coming out of the vents and this time I noticed it was over 60F shortly before I just turned it off. If I then drive for a while (hour or two) with the AC off and then turn it back on its as good as gold. Problem is my family is not happy for those few hours.
Its weird that both fan speed and cooling are reduced. Is there any component that anyone knows of that if on the fritz, or overheated, would give this effect?
Bad fuse/circuit breaker?

if the fan turns off , cause the ignition sw contact burned out, it cant pass air. ween there done that. if that happened a new sw will just do the same. just buy pass the A/C contacts with a relay. it takes a lot of work. but cheaper that a new ignition sw every 6 mo.
Are you sure the fan is actually slowing down? Or is the output of air at the vents lower than it should be for the given fan speed? A blocked A/C drain or other A/c issues can cause the evaporator to freeze solid and block air flow to the vents. It is best to trouble shoot what is happening as much as you can to make sure your replacing or repairing the correct thing, nobody likes spending 8 hours messing with something to have the same issue return once again.
The fan doesn't shut down completely, and yes the output at the vents is slower than it should be for the top speed. Top speed makes a very noticeable noise, when this occurs there is still some air coming out but no noise.
I'm thinking its the opposite of what you think its freezing up not getting hot that would explain the loss of air flow also. How to fix that I don't know maybe dump some Freon. It could be you are using inside air change to outside air to keep it from freezing up.

ok, so the easiest things to check first are to make sure the drain hose is clear, and the cabin filter is not dirty. Come to think of it, I have only noticed dripping water a few times and then not much.
I spent half an hour under the truck (firewall area) yesterday and didn't spot anything that looked like a drain hose. I even looked after driving it with the air on for 15 minutes (no dripping).
And I haven't the foggiest where the cabin filter would be.
Can anybody help out?
