P0456 - Evaporative Emissions Leak
My 2004 3.7 V6 Dakota threw a P0456 code earlier this afternoon. I gather that it is a small leak in the fuel vapour recovery system (http://www.obd-codes.com/p0456). Looking around the forums it seems that the common culprits are (1) poorly sealed fuel cap, (2) cracks in the vapour hoses near the leak detection pump.
Well my gas cap seems fine. It has a good amount of rubber seal and seems to be going on tight (though it's hard to tell with these newer ones that keep on spinning). I crawled underneath and found the fuel vapour leak detection pump on the right side forward of the gas tank. The hoses all look nice, no cracks, nothing out of the ordinary. I did notice a zip tie on one of the hoses and it looked a little wet. But it was oily to the touch and I think that might be residue left over from when I rust-proofed a few months ago. Not sure.
Anyhow, at first my cheap OBD2 reader kept failing to clear, but about a half hour later it just cleared the code. I went for a drive around the block and it hasn't come back.....yet. I feel like I've looked at the common culprits. Any other suggestions?

IMO it's a worthless code.
I bought the vehicle almost 6 months ago and today was the first time I've seen it. I can't have it reappear because this code will not allow my vehicle to pass the emission test portion of licensing. If you're having it reappear every few weeks, you likely have a leak somewhere.

It's very sensitive too. My hoses looked fine, but I replaced them and the code went away and never came back. The hoses are cheap (I think I paid like $10 for both). A gas cap is also cheap. It's not a big deal, but the light was starting to bug me and I needed it off to pass emissions.
Well I re seated the gas cap and the code hasn't come back. Perhaps there's something small on the seal that I'm not seeing. If it comes back, I'll change the fuel cap first and then go to the hoses from there.
My understanding is the cycle for this sort of code is 50-100 miles so I'll wait a few days and see what's what. Thanks to all who chimed in...
