Just picked up a 2001 crew cab dakota and I need to get a windshield to pass a saftey check. I'm trying to find one on the cheap and there are no '01s in any of the yards here. Just wondering if any windshield from the second gen family would fit? Appreciate any help you guys can offer.

 

i have a 01 dak. i have had to put 2 windshields in. the first one. i cranked the heat up to high with a pill of snow on it. the one that was put in to replace it cracked in very bottom corners. only 2-3 inches crack can been seen. does not limit seeing to drive. in some states the law calls out about the crack in the drivers sight, as a fail. dont know about 2 gen fit.

 

Thanks for the response. I know for a fact that it needs to be replaced, two big cracks over 12 inches long on each side. I've found a new one online for a 2000 model at a good price. I just don't want to order it and have it end up not fitting.

 

I'm about 98% sure that any second gen windshield would fit.

 

Have you called anywhere like Safelite about it? My Dad had one put in his 99 Ram Sport and installed it was 100 bucks. The guy even came out to his house and put it in and had it done in like 30 minutes. I didn't feel like it was too bad with installation.

 

I'm in Canada. A new one is going to run me about 300 if I buy it from a shop here. rockauto.com has a new windshield for a '00 so i guess i'll try that one.

 

It's really easy to install. Remove old windshield. Put bead of glue/sealant around windshield and press in place.

 

If it fit on an 01, you can bet that Rockauto would have it listed for that year. I'm betting that it won't.

Why don't you call a glass shop and see what they say about interchange?

And, respectfully, I kinda disagree about diy windshield installation. It's a pretty important safety piece, and may be structural for the vehicle, adding stiffness to that part of the body. And if you mess it up, it can pretty much explode in your hands, perhaps injuring you and at the very least destroying your new glass. I don't do my own dental work, or abdominal surgery, and I leave windshields to the glass guys who've been trained to work on them thangs.

 

That's what I was thinking. I'll give a few shops a call in the morning.

Agreed. The windshield needs to keep you in the vehicle in the event of a crash. To do that, it needs proper adhesive, properly applied. I've replaced a few windshields that were held in by the rubber moldings, but I leave the glued ones to the pros.
