I found a 04 4x4 on the back lot of a small Auto sales in KY.. it has a 3.7 I had several 3.9's and they are OK,, the 4.7 was best... is this 3.7 something to stay away from???

If you think the 4.7 was best then you'll like the 3.7. Its he same motor with 2 less cylinders.

Just like the 3.9 is the same as the 5.2.

3.7 arnt extremely common in our gen Dakotas since I think they were only offered in 04. And then with the 05+

I recently bought a 2004 club cab with the 3.7 and 4WD. So far, I haven't noticed any issues with the engine. Gas mileage is weak, though (I'm averaging 13 MPG in the four tanks I've gotten so far).

As a word of advice, make sure you check out the ball joints as the '04s are NOT part of the Durango/Dakota recall. Mine were shot even though the truck had only 61,000 miles.
