Default Cold Air Intakes

I thought this might be of interest.

A couple of weeks back, I bought a K+N type cone filter for my truck but didn't have time to make up the tubeing for it. I'm a Machinist/Welder by trade so I bought a couple of stainless,pre-formed 3", 90 degree bends and straight tubing. I didn't have the to time to do the welding so in the meantime I just used the filter and one bend conected to the original flexible tube and resonance chamber (I only removed the air-box). The efects were barely noticable and I was rather diserpointed. Today I managed to make the full pipe-work, removing everything up to the Throttle body. The effects are amazing! The intake noise is pretty loud on full throttle but goes away as soon as you back off. More importantly, the pick-up has improved dramaticly, epecialy from low revs. There's an improvement throughout the rev range. The reason I mention this is, if like me, you look on THAT auction site for Intakes you'll find a variaty of types. Some include full pipe-work, whilst some keep the original air-box body and the rest of the standard intake. Based on my findings, you know which type I'd recomend!
This is the final addition as far as the engine is concerned. I made a straight through muffler (kept the rest of the exhaust original) which gave a bit more power but more importantly for me, gave it a beautiful, deep sound without being too loud or intrusive at highway speeds. Next came a Superchips Micro tuner which made a big difference. They claim 10% for the 4.7 on the Performance program. If that's the case then my "seat-of the pants" dyno would give the Exhaust about 5%, the K+N type filter about 3% with stock pipe-work and about 8-10% with 3" pipes all the way through. Altogether it means at least 20% up on standard which is pretty good for a couple of hours work. And in case you were wondering, the gas mileage seams to have improved slightly (although it does of course need Super for the Performance setting), much appriciated when we are paying the equivilent of $6/Gallon!

Best wishes from across the Pond,

Paul

NICE!!!! I took the k&n ftpk for the v8 version of my dak and couldn't be happier also i get some impressive mileage numbers. Speaking of which, wyhat you getting with the new intake (please in miles per gallon, i suck at conversion math).

I noticed the same thing when I put the MOPAR CAI on my R/T. But don't expect your millage to last however. Once the ECU resets it will shove a helluva lot of fuel to "compensate" for the already rich mixture.

Another thing with the 4.7 the ECU will also kill your advance timing even with the flasher. So be careful on how hard you drive in between the time that you do mateninice.

Around town I'm getting around 12MPG (US Gallons) and out of town around 19. I think I've done the conversion right! Remember the official avarage speed for traffic in London is now 4MPH, it was quicker when it horses and carts! Friends who run Range Rovers, they don't get into double figurs around town so I'm pretty happy.

Why would the mixture be already rich? I thought the new iflter would lean off the mixture. I haven't calculated any figurs since fitting it, only did on Sat. Talking of timing, when I flashed the ECU it caused a bit of pinging between 3500 and 4500 revs on full throttle despite running it on Shell Optimax (the highest octane available over here, 93). I'd been in contact with Superchips who were very helpfull but couldn't surgest anything other than getting a dealer to re-flash the original settings or run it on the Towing program. Since fitting the full air intake system, the pinging has gone!

were there any mods that you had to do to get it to work? I'm thinking of getting a kit for the wifes truck and AirRaid seems to be the only one out there. I'd prefer to stick with k&n.

Just had to trim the flex tubing, air hat and air box bolted up in the same places, perfect fit. Also because of the CARB exempt sticker it makes it "legal" for use in CA. Something the budget e-bay intakes couldn't promice.
