Default 5.2 crankshaft sensor misfire

My son has a 97 Dodge Dakota 5.2. It felt like it was having transmission issues. Took it to a shop they diagnosed it as a crankshaft position sensor, due to the check engine light code. He drove it for quite a few months just around the neighborhood. The other day the engine just shut off. We purchased an American made crankshaft position sensor and installed it. The old one had no insulation on the three wires at the sensor end of the loom. (No wonder it had issues!) After we installed it, we tried to start it and it has an insane misfire. You can keep it running by peddling it a little bit but it is spitting stuttering and back firing. Also strong smell of fuel. Reset the PCM by methods read on this website. Help a little but not much. Help me please!!!!!!
