Default Crankshaft sensor error

I have a 97 Dodge Dakota with a 5.2 liter engine. For a long time now I get a crankshaft sensor error warning. the truck runs and does not stall. However, it does feel sluggish or hesitant at higher speeds sometimes. also, gas mileage is terrible. Averaging about 15 miles to the gallon. I tried changing the sensor but the error still comes back. I've had several Mechanics look at it and they're stumped as well. Any suggestions?

First of all, you did not post the code. Also, 15 mpg is not abnormal for a '97 Dakota 5.2 I happen to own one, for 12 years.

Did you use a Mopar sensor? There seems to be a slight clearance difference between Mopar and other brands. I just had mine replaced for the second time, and the shop removed the CarQuest part and went back with Mopar, and gave me a heavy discount on the labor….my Dakota is a 3.9 though, so your experience may differ…..good luck with it.
