Like 98dakaz said you can not clean cats.
Only replace or smash them out so you say it's
backfiring through the tail pipe or intake?

There are "cat clean" products on the market. Also youtube videos with Scotty Kilmer running a gallon of lacquer thinner in a tank of gas, or taking the cat off and dunking it in soap water for hours. Again, it's rarely ever effective.

Thanks everyone, my cousin said he punched a hole in the cat and stuck a rod thru it and punched the inside out, I am no mechanic and I'm beginning to think he's not either, yes it's backfiring thru the tail pipe and the speed hand is bouncing, I have replaced both speed sensors and the computer was replaces about a year and a half ago, please help. I'm a single mother and cant afford to have this truck put in the shop. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

A 3.9 Im thinking plenum leak/problem very common and fairly easy fix.

If the cat was gutted, you should be getting a CEL (check engine light). Was it back firing before he gutted it? What state do you live in? Do they have emissions?

What about the plugs and air filter? Also, you might have a bad injector, fuel pump, etc.

He said he stuck a rod thru a hole he made in the cat and no there's still no check engine light coming on, this truck is my only transportation to work, he said he has checked the spark plugs and wires and nothing wrong with them.
