2000 Dakota series of events after Check Gages
Oh no, it's the ever cryptic 'Check Gages' warning!
Last week, the overnight temps outside dropped about 20° so when I started my 2000 Sport 4cyl, it gave a cough, almost like an attempt at a backfire. I hadn't really had any issues so chalked it up as the weather change. Couple of days later, out of the blue, the 'Check Gages' light came on. Scanning the gauges, I saw the charge gauge was spiked to the far right. Got home, cleaned the battery posts with soda water, and all seemed okay. But now when I start the truck, if I don't hit the gas to get it started, it stalls. I have to nudge the gas pedal to get it started and into a good idle of 900rpm. Before the cough, it would always start on the second crank and always go straight to 900rpm. Now it's running rough at start and not sure what has happened. I don't get any error codes with the 3 time key turn.
Maybe I just need to run some injector cleaner?
I am clearly not a mechanic but can get things done to keep it running smoothly.
