New member needs simple wiring help
Hello all, not new to forums.. I have been member of a few Chysler 300 forums for about 5 years.
So I tried to search before asking, just hoping someone can help me find what I am looking for.
I purchased a set of (Ghost Lights, Shadow Lights, ect ) for my brother for Christmas. Want to help him get them wired up to the courtesy lamps to come on when he opens the doors.
Here's the patient:
2004 Dodge Dakota Quad Cab with Power window & Locks
What wires do I need to tap in the door?
Thanks
Ed

Welcome, Ed..
You should not need to do any wiring in the door(s). Go to the Central Timer Module (CTM) in the driver's kick panel. You can use the negative dome light wires there at the CTM. You will need a 12 volt relay to wire up the lights. If all you want is for the driver's door to turn the ghost lights on, use the tan wire at pin #15 on the 16 wire plug at the CTM. If you want the lights to turn on when any of the other doors are opened, you need to also use the tan/red wire at pin #13 on the same 16 wire plug at the CTM.
You can wire the relay like this:
Terminal 85 to the negative door trigger wire(s) from the CTM
Terminals 86 and 87 to 12 volts fused at the same amperage as the ghost light kit
Terminal 30 to the 12 volt positive input on the ghost lights
No connection on terminal 87a
Then just ground the ghost lights and the relay will switch power to the lights when the door is opened. If the truck has the factory keyless entry you should only need to use the driver's door trigger, because the dome lamp itself turns on when you unlock the truck with the factory keyless remote fob. So when you unlock the truck, whether you unlock only the driver's door or all four doors, the ghost lights should all turn on.
The driver's door has its own dedicated tan dome light trigger wire at the CTM, and the other three doors are all wired to the tan/red trigger wire. So if you do not have a factory keyless and want all four doors to trigger the ghost lights, you will need two 3 amp diodes at the door trigger wire connection at the CTM. Connect the bar side of one diode to the tan driver's door trigger wire, and connect the bar side of the other diode to the tan/red passenger/rear door trigger wire. Then twist the remaining two legs of the other sides of the diodes together and connect them both to terminal 85 on your relay. The diodes will keep the door trigger circuits from feeding ground back to each other and causing problems with the dome light circuit.
This wire configuration should work fine but be sure to test the circuits with a volt meter to confirm the wire functions and connections before you operate the ghost lights.

Really appreciate the info.
But, I guess I don't understand how I am NOT going to have to do any wiring in the doors since the ghost lights will be IN the bottom of the door panel and the CTM is IN the kick panel inside the cab.
When I did mine in my Chrysler 300 I just found a power source that was triggered when the door opened and grounded them..
I was hoping to just find out what wire was triggered like that here to save some time.

I don't know of any 12 volt positive circuit or wires in the doors of a Dakota. The door locks are a one-wire multiplex system that runs through the CTM. I don't think there is a 12 volt source at the door lock switch, and even if it were there I would not want to interface with it because it is such a low voltage door lock trigger system. There are no courtesy lights in the door either, but there is a wire from the door latch assembly that triggers the dome lamp system. It is a ground wire though. I do not have the wire schematic handy so am not much help in identifying it. If it were my truck I would just wire the relay to give the lights a ground, wire the 12 volt power and just run the ground and power into each door individually. It is more work that way but electronically speaking it is much safer to do it that way, in my opinion anyway.
