Unhappy HELP - Missing part of my transmission case?

Hey guys - I'm freaking out. I just bought a 2000 Dodge Dakota with 160k miles 4x4. I test drove the heck out of it and I also looked under the car...but two days later (tonight) when I got under it to change the oil I look up and I am looking at something that looks like it should be covered!!!!!

You can see the oil drain plug and then the gear thing is just behind that (towards the rear of the truck)...

First question, What the heck is that gear, what is the front of that case called?

Second question, Is this a huge problem like I think it is??

Thank you guys so much for the help I appreciate it!v

That's your torque converter drive plate. You're missing the splash shield that bolts onto the front of the lower half of the bellhousing. It's there to prevent water, dirt and debris from getting into the bellhousing and screwing up the assorted mechanicals inside. It's not a huge issue, but if you're gonna be muddin' with it, I'd find the right one and get it on there before you go off-road.

You're looking at the torque converter. There should be a sheet metal cover there, but it's not critical. I would replace it, though, to keep dirt, mud, small animals, etc. out of there.

*EDIT*
I type too slow.
