Default low battery cause no fire?

My nephew got stranded today in his '99 Dakota, 3.9L Auto, 2wd.

When I went to pick him up I did some basic trouble shooting but without the benefit of many of my tools. He said it quit in a fast food drive through line but started back so he pulled into a parking spot. When he came back out it wouldn't start back.

He said he didn't crank it much, but it was turning over pretty slow. The battery is about a month old. The fuel rail shrader valve would spit a bit of fuel so I'm thinking the pump is likely good. I shot some starting fluid down the TB and still nothing, so I'm thinking it's not firing.

I went ahead and brought the battery home to charge. Is there any chance a low battery could be causing no fire? It's turning over slow, but not slow enough my 5.7L TBI chevy wouldn't start.

I once had a 3.1L GM engine that did all kinds of weird stuff when the battery was on its way out. Since this is the first dodge I've been around, just want to make sure there isn't some weird quirk to it before renting the trailer to haul it to my house.

Thanks

Mike

Yes. If the alternator is weak/not charging, the PCM/Fuel Injector Drivers will shut down at roughly 11-11.5ish volts. A dead battery while cranking might be in the 9-10's range. you may or may not see the dash become a christmas tree in this situation as the voltage flunctuates.
