Default 04 Dakota 4.7 Auto Transmission acting funny...

Hey everyone,

Recently did a transmission change along with filters. Put it ATF+4... when cold, it measures an 1/8 of an inch over the top dot.

It has been fine for a week, but now... over the last few days in a row, when I've started it up in the morning and put it in any gear and press the accelerator, the vehicle doesn't move... as though it is not in gear. Other times, it'll lurch into whatever direction I've placed it in after hitting the gas (not a fun feeling).

At times, mostly when its cold, it'll will also not shift down when coming to a stop... instead, it kinda lurches around and in some cases, stalls.

After everything warms up, it seems to be fine.

What should I be looking for? Going to try and scan it in a few hours.

Cheers,
Parker

Well I scanned it...

P0841 - Transmission Fluid Pressure Sensor/Switch A Circuit Range/Performance popped up.

How long do I need to drive this thing for it to get to proper temperature? Dipstick says to measure in neutral and hot so I'll get to it... I put 6 litres in it.

When you pull the flat screen filter out, there is an O-ring on the neck. If that ring gets stuck up there, it doubles up with the new one and can cause issues.

Hmm... my ATP kit came with the flat filter, the spin filter and the flange seal that goes with the spin filter and the pan gasket...

i cant remember now but it possible the oring stuck to the old flat filter and I put the new one on without it... but of course I can't remember... there's 60 bucks down the drain

Why? Just drain it, pull the pan off and pull off the flat filter. Install it again properly, lubing the O-ring when putting it back on. Use the same pan gasket, just smear some gasket seal on it. Pour back in the same ATF you drained.

Well I feel like an idiot... but hopefully this helps someone in the future.

changed the fluid last week, cycled through the gears, measure cold in neutral like the dip stick says... checked it again today, level, cold and in neutral and there was barely a dot at the tip so I added another litre and it seems to have solved it.

i guess with the trans cooler there is more oil needed than the ) litres I initially put in... ughh
