Default EFI control solutions for OBD I

Hello,

I have a 1995 Dodge Dakota 2WD with the 5.2L. I want to upgrade the cylinder heads and camshaft but I know the regular OBD I computer doesn’t like this so much. What are my options to keep the stock EFI system but tune it for more severe modifications? Are there any good standalone systems people have tried? If so are they hard to install?

There are a few options.
The first option is that Mopar Performance (MP) made a performance PCM for Rams and Dakotas.
Next option is to get an OEM or MP PCM for a 5.9 since that will have a wider fuel map than the 5.2. (The Ram pickups and Vans PCM basically are the same pinout and can be used between one and other along with the 5.2 and the 5.9 can run off each other PCM, I know of this first hand)
Next is to get your PCM flashed, it is super rare these days but B&G performance did it at one time, CALL THEM! See link below.
Next is to get a multi-processor-driven signal manipulator, see the magazine article below.
Next is to get a stand alone fuel management system, like Megasquirt, and you can tune it yourself. See link below
Next is to convert from OBD1 to OBD2 as said above very time-consuming.

Factory Computer Reflashes

There are very little for Dodge OBD1.

The best would be a Mopar performance computer. You can get them at http://www.mopar.com/performance/index.html or http://www.summitracing.com/

I am a Newbe. But please see my post at https://dodgeforum.com/forum/1st-gen...-obd1-pcm.html . I am also on the Megasquirt forum http://www.msextra.com/forums/viewforum.php?f=94.

For some reason there are 3 or more of us with the exact same vehicle looking for almost the same thing.

The information I have gathered from the community is nobody wants to touch OBD1 anymore. I may never find out why my OBD1 won't work right with my motor. I will just conclude that the engine is way to much for the original tuning.

Our harnesses are almost 25 years old and really shouldn't be messed with at all. If we could do something with OBD1 it would be limited at best anyway. I think I am going with a new Megasquirt MS3 standalone system. Find and order new connectors to fit the original sensors and connect them to the new harness. Then carefully tie off the old harness without cutting it up. This will also allow me to optimize the setup the way it is and make it easy to add new stuff like a 4bbl throttle body etc... They do not work with cruise control though but there are solutions to that problem also.

Brian Esser (Esser Engineering) tried an MS3 and got rid of it for a Holley Dominator EFI on his dakota. Said the MS3 was out of date and lacking features for today's technology.
