2004 3.7 Power Steering
Hey all,
I have a 2004 3.7 Dakota with just over 100k that has had several powering steering pumps replaced. At least once by the previous owner, once by myself last year, and recently done in a shop. The power steering will still wine if I drive on the freeway for over 10 miles or so, but it is not really resisting nor leaking fluid. I suppose some air could still be in the system, but the wining is isolated after running at high speeds/longer time. I trust the mechanics who just did the pump to an extent, and would guess they went over the rack, and double checked the belt. I believe this could be an underlying issue, and just wanted to see if anyone had any insights. Thanks Y'all!

I believe the 3.7 uses the TC pump like the 4.7 and 5.7. That's a really good pump that shouldn't really wear out. If it only whines when hot, I am going to throw a guess out there that you are boiling the fluid. Again...that shouldn't be happening.
When it's hot, pop the cap on the reservoir (it *should not* be pressurized, and is safe to open) and see how much foaming is present on the dipstick attached to the cap. Foam is bad, alot of it is worse.
If you want a professional opinion, call Steerco/AGR Performance. 817-626-9006 and ask for Big John or Josh. I run their pump on my truck and have suggested them for others. It's a performance shop (American Gold Racing) that takes a completely different approach to "remanufacturing" steering components...I've been through their manufacturing facility and they know their way around.
