Default Transmission replacement woes

Greetings! I have a 2004 Dakota Sport, 3.7L, V6, 2wheel drive with 237,000 miles. Transmission died last week, and I have replaced it with another 42RLE tranny from an '05 Dakota. The main problem I have is that I can't seem to make the transmission agree with my shift lever. With my lever in park, the "selector (?)" on the trans case all the way to the rear, my display reads that I am in reverse, and the truck will not start. I have tried the shift cable adjustment to no avail. So then, as I was scratching my head and saying bad words, I looked at the transmission I took out. Started playing with the selector. I found out that there is an "extra" position that it can be put into. By that I mean, if I move it as far to the rear as it will go, and start with park, moving one click up ( into reverse?), then N, D, 2,1... I can move it one more click. Same on the replacement. Can someone tell me where I am going wrong? Are there supposed to be 7 places the selector can be put? This is my only vehicle, please help!
