I have a 3.9l 1997 Dakota with a little over 100k original miles. I blew out the transfercase (see picture) and am in desperate need over replacing.

Does anyone know what years fit each other? Can I swap in a transfercase from a 4.7l or 5.2l? What about Durango’s?

Any suggestions help!

Wow, nice failure!
That transfercase is limited to 97-99 dak/dur. I think the 42 RE (yours) and 44Re (5.2) are the same output shaft (input of the transfer). Not sure on 46RE (5.9). Also not sure on manual transmission trucks. 2000 and newer case is different, so 4.7 or 3.7 is out of the picture completely.

 

Oh it was like a bomb going off while going 65 😂. I found a place that has a 5.2l Dakota but wrong year. I’ll keep an eye on this thread!
