I agree 100% under rated mid size truck the first two years of the 2nd gen had a number of problems but by 2000 it had made quality upgrades and by 2002 even more improvements I would say the 2002 to 2004 were the best of the 2nd gen Dakotas.

they needed to keep the 318 and 360 vs the 4.7 though.

I say 2003-2004... better brakes. Rear discs. Tow package with heavy duty cooling is a big plus for longevity, IMHO.
