Default Can't get interior trim reinstalled

2002 Dakota Club cab.

I recently recovered my headliner. Got things back together EXCEPT the large plastic trim pieces that surround the pop-out windows and the seatbelts go through.

I cannot get the top of that piece to go in, on either side of the pickup. It is interfering with the sliding seatbelt adjustment, and looks bad besides.

I've had them off and back on half a dozen times and I am stumped. I can slide my fingers behind the piece at the top, and can't feel anything that is keeping it from seating.

Anyone have the answer to what it is I'm doing wrong?

Thanks in Advance,

Lyle

I have the quad cab, so mine may be different, but usually those pieces are held on by metal clips. Did you lose any?

It had the plastic push pins, didn't lose any clips or pins. Its not that it won't stay in place, but it won't go in tight to the top of the side. I can't find what's keeping it from going up tight at the top.

If there are any junkyards near you, you might want to pay a visit so you can see how they're secured, or grab any items you might need.

A new headliner? What did you recover it with? If the new headliner isn't the same as the old, then it may be the problem as it may be thicker. If this is the case, you may need to trim a little material off the trim pieces to make up any difference in thickness of the new headliner. Also, is the headliner itself fully secured? If the headliner retainers aren't quite in as they should be then this may be what's keeping the trim from fully seating in.

Pulled the headliner out, stripped off the fabric, wire brush/wire cup on angle grinder to clean off all of the old foam, sprayed on high temp contact cement, and attached new foam backed material. (headlinermagic.net) and put the headliner back in the truck. Headliner fits fine. Just cannot seem to get those to trim pieces to fit right.
