Default 03 dakota r/t external regulator install

hi, i installed a larger alternator and an external regulator. . it generates power great, no problems.
the gauge sometimes pegs for awhile and i get a blinking engine light. this happens randomly as far as i can tell. i have a voltage meter hooked up. and the voltage stays steady all the time.
any ideas how to fix this issue?
thanks

Arlan/Bomrat,

I saw your post in the R/T group earlier. What Chad said is a good starting point - You need a very clean ground reference for the regulator. Is the factory volt meter staying constant to match your digital volt meter?

Usually a flashing check engine light is more emissions related. Are there any pending codes stored in the computer?

Only other guess I have is that the PCM may be upset that its wires for the alternator are cut and open. You may have to put a dummy resistor across them or something.
