How can you tell what rear axle ratio is on a dakota?

its in your owners manual... and/or if you kept the sale sticker that was on your window at the dealership it is also written on that... but probably yours is a 3 55 gear ratio, most dakota are....

 

you might also find the axle ratio on the sticker that is from the factory which is located on the driver's side door jam. hope this helps!

 

Also check the glove box. My 02 has the codes in there.

 

if the previous posts don't help, try this:

-jack up one rear tire, tranny in neutral
-mark tire and drive shaft with chalk or something
-now rotate tire 1 revolution while counting driveshaft turns
-3 1/2 turns on drive shaft = 3.55 gears

Or look for the tag/sticker. I've got a green sticker wrapped around my front passenger side axle stub housing that says '3.92 open'. There should also be a metal tag under one of the bolts on the rear diff cover, iirc.
