Default Add OEM remote radio switches for use with After market head unit

Sorry if this duplicates any previous discussion;
2002 Dakota SLT Quad Cab with highline Central Timimg Module. It does not have remote radio switches, but I would like to add them for use with an Android Auto head unit I have installed. Has anyone added remote radio switches by modifying the steering wheel back cover or replacing the wheel with a switch equipped unit? According to the shop manual wiring diagram, its a simple circuit that goes from the CTM through the clock spring to the switches. I could probably cut holes and mount the switches using a Dremel tool. The wheel switches are available and are not expensive. The CTM may need to be flashed for the RAZ sales code, but maybe not.
As for the connection to the head unit (Boss Be7ACM), I believe the AXXESS AXSWC-1 could then provide the correct signals.

Anyone have ideas about making this work. I saw something in my research that encouraged me, but cannot find it again.

Thanks
Lyndon

I was able to do this in my 1999, I just pulled the leather steering wheel and back cover off of a good condition Durango from the u pull yard. It has been a while, but if I remember correctly I had to change the clockspring but I didn't have to do anything with the ctm. Then I had to splice a wire on the output side of the clockspring to the signal input wire on the head unit. The switches apply different resistances to a fixed input voltage so if you have the ability to program your switches inside of your head unit, you may not need the Axxess module. My cheapo Chinesium android tablet unit has programming capability so it worked fairly easily. Make sure you measure the resistances on your switches so that you don't have two switches outputting the same signals.
