2002 3.9 to 4.7 swap
Hello all, new guy here.
I have a 2002 Dakota 2WD, 5 speed trans and a 3.9 V6 with about 209K miles. Runs fine with no issues.
I plan on keeping the truck and also plan on retiring in the next 5 years so I am planning on replacing the engine and clutch before that. I do not want to buy another vehicle.
I have access to a 2003 Dakota 4WD 5 speed 4.7 V8 with about 160K miles. Runs good, body is rotten. I can get this for $500
Im thinking of rebuilding the 4.7 and swapping out the 3.9 this summer.
My questions are
Will my 5 speed bolt up to the 4.7?
Im hoping the 2003 4.7 ECM will plug in no problems?
Where would I verify which transmission I have in the 2002? The code is in the glovebox?
Or, would I be better off just buying a 5.9? It seems more common.
My 5 speed will bolt up to the 5.9 but will it hold up under normal driving?
Thanks all SB

After checking multiple sources including the local Dodge parts department, the 4.7 and 3.9 use the same 5 speed transmission. The part number is RL108228AD. Dealer quoted $887 for a new trans.
Bought the 2003 donor truck which has donated power windows, door locks, cruise control, tilt column, power, heated mirrors and overhead display. All is working as it should. A bit of a hassle swapping out the wiring but all was basically plug and play.
Plan on rebuilding the 4.7 to replace the 3.9.
Any tips or advice would be welcomed!
thanks all sb
