Default Changing oil filter on a 4.7

02 4X4 4.7
Has anyone come up with a better idea or mod for that stupid
hand hole idea some moron engineer came up with to get at
the oil filter on the 4.7 engine?

Everytime I change oil and filter I cuss this thing out always
thinking (out loud sometimes), there has GOT to be a better
way for the filter replacement. If you don't lay out a bunch of
rags to soak up the oil, you got one hell of a mess to clean up!
Even with the rags you still have out of control oil running
down your arm spiling all over the place!

Anyone seen or done a mod to the plastic covering? I'm about
ready to remove it for good.

Maybe the 05 and 06's with the 4.7 has a better way?

Any suggestions guys?

Yeah, I cut up a 2 liter bottle, and use that to take the oil filter off, it catches about 98% of the oil that comes out and doesn't leave the big mess that it usually does. Hopefully this helps you out.

on the 06, the plastic bottom piece is completely gone. When I had my 02 I used to pull 2-3 of the plastic clips out and bend the plastic shield out of the way so access was easier. and definetly used the 2-liter bottle trick, or if by chance you don't have any of those just use one of those plastic shopping bags to put around the filter once you have broken it loose while you are hand spinning it down

zip-lock FTW, inside out like you're picking up poo with it, then seal the filter and all inside.
Or get a filter relocation kit. I've got one sitting downstairs that used to be on my Ram, and I thought about putting it on my Dakota but there's no point right now.

I just took the plastic shell off. It's the same thing on my 3.9L.

take a piece of cardboard cress it in the middle and put it under the filter so the oil runs down the cardboard
